Teamwork!

It never ceases to amaze me how many people try to do things on their own without asking for help. I often think that if it was meant to be that way, God wouldn't have invented wives or other people for that matter. In fact, the simple reason that I blog, is not just for my own enjoyment but to truly demonstrate some sort of teamwork through words of encouragement. Certainly, one can shoot a few hoops by themselves but the exciting and challenging part of the game, would be lost forever. The fact of the matter is, we need each other to grow, to challenge, and to support us in most endeavors. Teamwork is essential at home, at work and at play. Proverbs 11:14 suggests this when it reads "For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure". Ya see, exercising the use of gifts from other talented people in our lives is as necessary as waking up in the morning. If you want to experience true success, then make it your goal to establish a teamwork attitude and place the proper people within your circle of influence.

What kind of friend are you?

Everyone at one time or another is confronted with the question, "who really are my friends"?  Some people have improper motives for assuming the position of friendship. Others, are not even in the category of "friends" but more like acquaintances. The best way to describe a friend is someone who will be there whenever you need them. Now, I'm not sold on this definition but it certainly holds some value. I once heard of a quote that said "If you have 52 friends, it would be equivalent to a party per week". Do you feel your friends measure up to that? Here's a few truths about me: 1. I think I'm a nice guy. 2. I enjoy laughing and making others laugh. 3. Pretty consistent. Even in saying all of this, I'm not so sure I would equate myself to a "party per week". However, I'm sure there are some people that would argue that about me but that's just because they have no other friends. (haha) The scripture defines friendship in Proverbs 18:24 "There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother". Can you say that about your friends? More importantly, can they say this about you?

To be or not to be...offended

Are you the type of person that always looks to get offended? If not, perhaps you know of someone who cannot handle even the slightest critique. I am in no way insinuating that true offenses don't occur but on the other hand, I feel that our culture has become extremely thin skinned. I have to say that although I don't enjoy being criticized over certain areas in my life, I do welcome constructive criticism when given from someone that has my best interests at heart. The reality is, that when truth is spoken in love, we should always be open to receive it in good faith. If we are honest with ourselves, we will recognize that pride tends to keep us from having a teachable spirit, suggesting that we can do everything on our own. Simply put, in many of the things we say and do, having another set of watchful eyes may be all that is needed. By saying this, we should welcome the thoughts and opinions of others as these are the very things that may strengthen our character and add value to our lives. Do yourself a favor, the next time someone gives you an open rebuke, don't be so quick to brush them off as being judgemental for they may have some validity to their claim. Proverbs 1:1-7 "A wise man takes heed to instruction but the fool despises correction".

I deliver on Fairrington

Recently, I was given the opportunity to interview at a company that would put most organizations to shame. It truly was one of the most genuine experiences that I have had in my many years of employment. Although, I am not sure whether or not I will get the call back, my faith is restored in the fine art of capitalism because of the leadership skills I've encountered along the way. It is the first time that I have actually spoken the words "This place is doing it right". What I mean by this, is that, the interview process was more about my character and who I am as a person versus the description of the job details. I felt as though they understood that if a person has a strong, solid character, then the work ethic along with a positive attitude will follow. In essence, this will ultimately bring about the success that is desired. This is an excellent business strategy because most competitors tend to focus more on the processes and how they can make them more efficient whereas Fairrington recognizes that the processes among competitors are quite similar but the way to win a sustainable competitive advantage is through investing in their people. I'm reminded of a popular TV program called Undercover Boss whereas the officers of the company step down from their lofty positions to gain a better understanding of the operations within the company. Upon completion, they recognize that it's the people in their organization that truly contribute to the company's success. Now, I am hopeful to gain employment at this praiseworthy establishment, but if not, it does my heart good to know that people are once again investing in their greatest assets. My hats off to you Fairrington, you truly do deliver!

Pushing Through

Ya know, just last week I was announced the Biggest Loser at my church's weight loss challenge. Although it was exciting to win, not so sure I feel the same about the new title I've received. The thing that I can take away from this experience is that life offers many challenges and depending upon whether or not we have the ability to push through some of them, may determine our final outcome. My kids inspire me to take on crazy challenges such as this one because I want to teach them the value of hard work, no matter what circumstances they may face in this life. Having been around for close to 40 years, I understand that life isn't always a bowl of cherries. Therefore, it is essential for all of us at one time or another to utilize the gifts that God has given us to perservere through the many trials along the way. Words that I have come to respect are those such as: Fortitude, Drive, Perserverance, Focus, Determination, Success. Often times these words are neglected in our day to day living but if you plan on winning at anything, these words will definitely be important ingredients to push you through towards achieving your goals. 1 Corinthians 9:24 "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one get the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize".
